My top 26 successful
events & fundraising campaigns

Seeing Susan Seipel win yet another medal at the Paris Paralympics made me know it was time to retire when I realised…this was her THIRD paras! I’d already started teaching my first pupil’s GRAND children, so it was time to go back to my first love of P&C and HR, however, I am still happy to donate to charity events, just let me know what you’re up to, and if I can help I certainly will….here’s some amazing fundraisers I’ve done in the past. (Hint…the one that made the most money was No. 3).

1. fundraising Lectures & DEMOS

For 30 years, I have donated hundreds of lunchtime demos, lectures & events to Paraequestrians, therapeutic riding centres, mounted police units and pony clubs. In 2025 I retired from sports, but still happy to donate lectures and demos. Your club can charge a small entrance fee, host a few raffles or silent auction, and your club, charity, or fundraising campaign will have a fun and educational fundraising event.

2. CONFERENCES

I have organised many large conferences for the University of NSW, the International Society of Rider Biomechanics and the International Anti-Slavery Commission. I am happy to speak at charitable/fundraising events, or help organise conferences for worthy causes.

3. most $$$ ever!

When I was contracted by Adecco to open the first office for the now-world famous Heart Research Institute, we started in a tiny room, on old borrowed chairs stuffed somewhere at the back of Camperdown Hospital – just myself and a retired Naval Captain. Drawing from my father’s extraordinary entrepreneurial “smarts” and fundraising efforts for the Queensland Youth Orchestra in the 1970s, I organised a gala event for the “Wall Street” movie premiere with no budget – literally we didn’t even have petty cash. I got everything was donated, down to the champagne flutes. This fundraiser was a tremendous success. Today, the Institute has its own world-class venue, and I’m proud to have witnessed its VERY humble beginnings, with just the little old pot plant I dragged in from home as our “a pot plant as our sole “office decor”.

4. BUSINESS BREAKFASTS

As an Expert Witness in Court, and also the previous Spokeswoman for the WorkCover Authority of NSW, I am happy to donate a lecture to your local business group. It’s not just about fundraising, but about increase community awareness of your fundraising campaign. I am happy to donate time when I can. Let me use my platform to help your worthy fundraising cause.

5. COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING EVENTS.

I have competed in, and organised a bunch of fun-runs in the past, and hosted an Official Marathon Race Water Station on my property Black Pearl Farm. Contact me to see if I can help you with Council approvals, funding applications and organisation. You can add in trade stands, raffles and auctions and not just raise funds – but raise community awareness to your campaign as well.

6. TELETHON FUNDRAISERS

the world’s most successful fundraising event.

I first donated time to the Channel 7 Australia Telethon in the 1970’s when it was held at SeaWorld on the Gold Coast. Since then I have manned phones, and been a supervisor for telethons for Channel 7 many times. You might not have a bank of volunteers manning phones, but there are a lot of variations on this theme that are very successful. Let me know your fundraising goals, and I’m happy to advise your club or charity on how telethon’s work.

When I realised Police did not have the funds for elite level training, I decided to always DONATE clinics and lessons to the riders who risk their lives to protect us.

7. POLICE FUNDRAISING EVENTS

When I started running research projects to develop tests and standards to test a rider’s “stickability”, I realised this training could save an Police Officer’s life. However world-wide mounted police budgets were being cut. So, I started donating lectures and training to units around the world. Twenty years later, I was approached by the world-famous London Metropolitan Police, and, then only photos can describe the feeling of being in such historic surroundsings:

I am retired, but still happy to donate lectures, training and help with Police Open Days where the public are allowed into the stables, or police give performances. Let me help with rider’s “stickability”, and help with sore knees, back pain and numb feet that could be a career-ender. Contact me for donations. I am happy to help.

8. GALA EVENING EVENTS

I was only 13 years of age when I helped back stage for the Queensland Youth Orchestra fundraiser at the Town Hall, Brisbane to help them attend their first International Festival of Youth Orchestras in Switzerland. Since then I have organised the official first night opening of the movie “Wall Street” to raise funds for the Heart Research Institute. I have organised evening fundraising events, large and small, live auctions and donated my time, for several years, to Chair the Organising Committee for the global “Medal of Freedom” Awards Night at the Mirage Casino, Las Vegas for the International Anti-Slavery Commission.

9. EDUCATION DAYS

I had the honour of organising my first international conference in 1986 for the Cornea and Contact Lens Unit at the University of NSW, and since that time I have arranged literally hundreds of educational events around the world. Education days can be great fundraising tools for any campaign. I am retired from sports, but still happy to donate lessons, clinics and lectures to worthy causes.

10. SILENT AUCTIONS

When I donate a fundraising lecture, I encourage clubs to hold auctions & raffles to boost their fundraising. In the past I have successfully had donated holidays and helicopter rides and gift certificates of all kinds: for hairdressing, car servicing, groceries and more.

11. GOLF DAYS

I am happy to give free biomechanics lessons, or lectures to golf enthusiasts, or to help publicise a golf day that you’re using for fundraising. Golf days are super fun, even for beginners! I am retired from sports coaching, but always happy to help worth causes.

12. LECTURE & BINGO NIGHT

What fantastic fun! A normal Friday night lecture, that I normally donate to a club was turned into a fun “wine & bingo” night! I made the lecture generic: how to get rid of back pain, exercises to improve your golf, how children should (or shouldn’t) carry backpacks. A lecture to suit all, followed by a quick couple of fundraising bingo rounds. All in all a profitable, and super-fun night.

13. TRIVIA NIGHTS

Host either an educational “test” type trivia night where you can test your club members in a fun way…or host a generic fun night you see in every pub…either way, trivia nights have been a great fundraiser for riding clubs and athlete’s fundraising campaigns in the past.

14. GARAGE SALES

If you are fundraising for your charity, athlete with a disability or mounted police unit…let me know if you are having a garage sale. These days it doesn’t have to be a bunch of stuff on your front lawn, it can be on social media, Facebook marketplace or similar. Let me know. I’m happy to publicise worth causes.

15. COCKTAIL PARTY &
“MEET & GREET”

I have organised many fundraising cocktail parties and “meet-and greet” events, from little back yard events to help disabled athletes right through to grand events at the Mirage Casino in Las Vegas for the International Anti-Slavery Commission to help end modern slavery & human trafficking. I’m always happy to donate time to organise, host, MC and attend events. Let me know your fundraising dreams, and I hope I can help.

16. SCAVENGER HUNTS/
CAR RALLIES

Not just for kids. Scavenger hunts can be anything from an Easter Egg hunt for little kids, to car rallies and BBQs for us “big kids”. They can be educational, asking questions, or they could just be fun with a bunch of donated prizes, raffles or actions, or a lunch or dinner afterwards. Let me know what your fundraising goals are, and I’ll do my best to donate time to your worthy fundraising cause to help you.

17. KARAOKE & TALENT NIGHTS

Now, don’t ask me to sing, or the local lost cat’s home will come and take me away! (lol.)…however what I’ve done now, many times, is MC karaoke and talent nights, and auctions both live and silent. I’m happy to donate time to turning your charitable fundraising into a true event to remember. This is probably the most fun you’ll ever have fundraising for your campaign.

18. CAR WASH

Certainly it’s a summer job, but car washes have always been a traditional way to raise funds. Car washes don’t just help out with fundraising. You can’t miss them. A bunch of people on the side of the road – no-one doesn’t see them. It’s a great way to bring local awareness to your fundraising campaign. It’s a GREAT way to be seen!

19. BAKE SALE – BAKING COMPETITIONS

Another traditional way to fundraise is the good ol’ bake sale. Turn the bake sale into a baking competition you could have the winners at your school, your college or at a local farmer’s market where you could sell the baked goods. Not just a way to raise funds – but a way to get the word out to the community about your cause. I can’t bake – at all….but I’m happy to publicise your event on my platforms, or give you the help you need to reach your fundraising goals.

20. SAUSAGE SIZZLES &
COFFEE STANDS

Bunning’s Sausage Sizzle is famous all over Australia, and there are similar all over the USA and UK/Europe. Brilliant not just for raising funds, but for bringing community awareness to your group. Hand out fliers, and really get your voice heard locally, sign up new volunteers and spark enthusiasm for your campaign. I can’t cook, but I’ll certainly help where I can.

21. PEER TO PEER FUNDRAISING

Peer to peer fundraising is a strategy where non-profits encourage supporters to create individual fundraising campaigns, reaching out to their own friends, and own local community. If you are helping fundraising for a charity, let me know how I can help. I can donate fundraising lectures, demos and presentations to charity groups, and publicise your event on my platforms.

22. COMPETITIONS & AWARDS

I have run competitions, big and small, in just about every category. It costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to fly horses and riders to competitions. It’s even worse for riders with a disability. Fundraising takes a village. Yes, you need the cash, but you need the community behind you to realise Olympic-level goals. If you can get a couple of schools behind a writing competiition, or essay competition or similar, it is an invaluable way to build that essential community awareness. Fundraising really does take a village, this is also such a wonderful benefit to the children who submit their writing or essays.

23. CLINICS & SHORT COURSES

For 30 years I have written and presented clinics and short courses all over the world. My world lecture tour included building, dismantling and shipping my tradestand from country to country. I booked and flew horses internationally including all the complicated taxation and immigration compliance. At every clinic, I would donate an evening lecture that the club could turn into a “wine and cheese”, or “coffee and cake” event, with the fundraising going to the club, Paraequestrian or therapeutic program. As of 2025 I am retired from teaching sports, however I still love donating lectures, clinics and short courses to worth causes.

I have never charged a disabled athlete for a lesson.
I am retired from sports, but I am still DELIGHTED to help with your fundraising.

24. FUNDRAISING FOR CLIENTS with disabilities

For 30 years I have had the honour of working with NDIS/PIP/SSDI clients and received several awards for my work with clients with a disability.

I have had many years experience writing formal NH&MRC & ARGS-Style Grant Applications, but also incredibly successful sponsorship applications, and a lifetime of developing clever “out of the box” creative solutions for athletes for their fundraising. With many year’s experience as a personnel consultant, I’m also happy to donate time to athletes with a disability to help you improve your resume, interview skills, or blocks to employment, or help you swim easily through the maze of NDIS/PIP/SSDI paperwork. See Support for Disabled Athletes

It’s hard enough to get funding and sponsorship for able-bodied athletes, but para-equestrians are one of the lowest-funded sports. I am retired from sports, however if you are a rider with a disability, a veteran, or from disadvantaged circumstances, and need a hand to get your fundraising started, I am happy to donate time help.

25. DUCK RACES

My first fundraiser was when I was 13 years of age, and I have been involved in fundraising ever since. However, when it came to fundraising for myself, I was reluctant to start, However in 1995 when I was offered a scholarship to train in the USA, my first fundraiser for myself was a duck race down the Nerang River. I soon found out it was way more beneficial than just betting on ducks floating down the river, it was VERY MUCH about bringing the community together and gathering team of volunteers that signed up on the day to get the community behind me to help. We raised all the money in one afternoon, but to me, just as important… raised friendships that lasted a lifetime!

26. I’ve DELIBERATELY
LEFT THE BEST TILL LAST

I was fundraising for an athlete to go to Sydney Olympics, and I didn’t even know where to start. I made the best decision in fundraising I ever made…I wrote to Australian legend Dick Smith and said (not in so many words) “look I don’t want your money, I presume half of Australia have asked you for a handout….what I am writing to ask you is for 15 minutes of your time to advise me how to go about fundraising the hundreds of thousands of dollars I needed. Not only did he reply to my letter, he called me several times until he got a hold of me, finally at 11pm at night! He not only gave me 15 minutes, but a good hour of advice. You can do the same. Contact me and ask me for my advice from 30 year’s experience….and ask me the most important thing Dick Smith told me, that I’v never forgotten. We got our athletes to Sydney, and many many more. I can help you too.
